How to protect Windows logins with MFA when using Google Workspace account credentials?

Modified on Mon, 2 Sep at 8:11 AM

This guide will walk you through enabling Rublon MFA for Windows using Google Workspace accounts.

This guide assumes you already have a working setup where users log in to Windows using Google Workspace accounts and now want to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to protect their logins. If you do not have such a setup, download and install Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW).

To enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for Windows logins when using Google Workspace account credentials:

1. Download and run the installer for Rublon for Windows 5.0.0 or higher.

2. During the installation of Rublon for Windows, you will encounter the option to configure the username format. Under the Configure username format section, select the User Principal Name (UPN) option. This step is crucial because it ensures that the usernames sent to the Rublon API are in the form of Google Workspace email addresses.

Note: When you choose User Principal Name (UPN) as the username format, you must ensure that every user on this computer (even those not managed by GCPW) has a UPN assigned to their account. Otherwise, the user may be bypassed or denied access, depending on the FailMode option.

3. Complete the Rublon for Windows installation and test the setup by logging in to a Windows machine using a Google Workspace account. Rublon MFA should prompt the user as expected, securing the login process.
