How do you calculate the subscription price when a change is made in the middle of a billing cycle?

Modified on Tue, 6 Feb at 12:04 PM

Rublon uses Braintree as its payment platform. Braintree uses proration to adjust prices that were changed in the middle of a billing cycle. When you increase the number of protected users in the middle of your Rublon subscription, Braintree adjusts the new price based on how many days are left in the billing cycle. Refer to the following example to better understand how proration works.

Monthly Proration Example

Bob has a monthly Rublon Business subscription for 15 users that bills $30.00 on the first of each month. Bob decided to increase the number of protected users to 30 on June 10. He already paid his $30 monthly bill for June on June 1. So, Bob will be charged a prorated amount to cover the charge for the rest of the month.

Original monthly Rublon subscription cost = $30

New monthly Rublon subscription cost = $60

Number of days left in the billing cycle = 20

Total number of days in the billing cycle = 30

($60 – $30) x (20 / 30) = $20

Here are the charges Bob will see in Billing → Overview → Payment History:

June 1: $30

June 10: $20

July 1: $60

Note: Rublon will not pay you back the difference if you decrease the number of users in the middle of a billing cycle. This is why we recommend you downgrade on the last day of your billing cycle.

Annual Proration Example

Alice has an annual Rublon Business subscription for 50 users that billed $1,200.00 when it was started on January 1. Alice decided to increase the number of protected users to 80 on June 1. She already paid $1,200.00 for 50 users on January 1. So, Alice will be charged a prorated amount to cover the change for the rest of the year.

Original annual Rublon subscription cost = $1,200

New annual Rublon subscription cost = $1,920

Number of days left in the billing cycle = 213

Total number of days in the billing cycle = 365

($1,920 – $1,200) x (213 / 365) = $420.16

Here are the charges Alice will see in Billing → Overview → Payment History:

January 1: $1,200

June 1: $420.16

Note: Rublon will not pay you back the difference if you decrease the number of users in the middle of a billing cycle. This is why we recommend you downgrade on the last day of your billing cycle.
