How to migrate Rublon for Windows to a new domain controller

Modified on Wed, 7 Feb at 2:04 PM

If you are using Rublon for Windows on your domain controller and will retire this server, you may want to migrate the Rublon software from the existing domain controller to the new domain controller. This article will tell you how to do that.

How to migrate Rublon for Windows to a new domain controller

Migrating Rublon for Windows to a new domain controller is simple.

There are two scenarios:

  • You have Rublon for Windows installed on your domain controller only.

  • You have Rublon for Windows installed on multiple endpoints that use the domain controller for authentication.

Depending on your scenario, follow the steps below.

Scenario 1: I have Rublon for Windows installed on my domain controller

If you protect your domain controller workstation login with Rublon for Windows MFA, you need to enable Multi-Factor Authentication on your new domain controller as well.

1. Export the registry configuration. Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Rublon\WindowsLogon, right-click WindowsLogon, and select Export.

2. Uninstall the connector.

3. Install the connector on the new domain controller.

4. Import the registry configuration by running the registry configuration file on the new domain controller.

Scenario 2: I have Rublon for Windows installed on multiple endpoints that use the domain controller for authentication

A domain controller is a server that responds to authentication requests from users and applications. For example, your domain controller may run Active Directory and allow your users to log in to their Windows endpoints by checking their AD credentials.

Domain workstations are the computers that are joined to the domain and use the domain controller for authentication.

You do not have to reinstall the Rublon for Windows connector on your domain workstations (endpoints). If you already have the Rublon for Windows connector on all your endpoints, Rublon MFA should work as usual after you move your domain controller to a new server.

However, you should make sure you properly migrate your domain controller. This mainly means migrating all users and roles without changes.
